What can you get away with eating while pregnant (that you're often told you cannot eat). Don't think I could ever give up eating cheese... 🧀

Eggs. Salmonella advice is so outdated. Also I treated myself to one alcoholic drink a week.

I'm a bit of an advocate of if you fancy it have a little. I think your body craves things and go with your gut- literally. It's the opposite of food aversion I guess. Eat and be merry!

Stilton and blue cheese is often a point of confusion. The blue bit isn't the issue it's whether the cheese is runny or not so stilton is actually fine. Given we're brits and huge fans of the stuff we did quite a bit of looking around but I should say we're not experts

Sushi is allowed if it's supermarket sushi as it's been frozen. Yay. And I figure posh sushi is fine too. And also a bit of wine. I wasn't very good at being pregnant.

I completely agree @Michelle. The advice seems to get really mixed up. Something the people at Tantrum should put straight!!

I am addicted to Parma ham and when I was pregnant, someone at work told me I shouldn't eat it. I was devestated. So I did a bit of research (read the first 3 things that came up on Google) and paid no attention to his advice. The only side-effect: both my children are addicted to Parma ham.

The egg advice is ridiculous- as long as the egg is lion stamped (so pretty much any shop bought U.K. egg) then having it runny is fine. I kept on being told I couldn't have smoked salmon by people who'd read advice from American websites that doesn't apply in the U.K..

That's interesting @Guest. Is there a difference in types of smoked salmon between the US and the UK or simply a difference in how the health regulators view it?

Agree re Stilton. I dutifully spend about 7 months depriving myself of pretty much any tasty and interesting cheese, until I realised Stilton was ok. Conversely, a friend discovered some pasteurised Brie and was over the moon. When I did some reading it looked like that actually made little difference as the reason behind Brie not being allowed seemed to be something to do with the production or the mould that was still applicable if pasteurised. It's immensely confusing.

Re smoked salmon (that was me, I'm now signed up) I think I read that it was due to different production. I can't imagine their food safety regulations being more stringent than the UK/ EU.

nice to meet you Mama Wiggles. Thanks for all the helpful responses. As an FYI - You can also add an image and a small bio for when people click your name if you want to + a link to a website.

I broke a lot of the rules while pregnant. There are also lots of hacks to get around some of the problems. For example if you freeze cured meats like parma ham for 3 days and then defrost in fridge, you will have killed the offending bacteria. There's an amazing book called Expecting Better by Emily Oster, which was my pregnancy food bible. It's based on hard evidence and I recommend it to all pregnant women!

Ooh! Didn't know about that freezing hack! You have been lucky so far, parma ham, but now I'm coming for you.... Thanks, SoFarSoFood. You get a well deserved Brain Point.

My pleasure - I actually whooped out loud when I first realised I could eat it with no guilt! I've just checked and it's 4 days...so a little bit longer to wait. The info is on the NHS website, but very easy to overlook. http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/917.aspx

There is so much you can eat that you think you can't! Most cheese is fine if it is made from pasteurised milk! If you want mould ripened cheese then bake it first..YUM! If you are craving BLUE cheese then Stilton is fine! Avoid other blue cheeses! Sushi is fine - restaurants have to freeze their fish before they serve it, so that kills all the nasties! Raw or runny eggs are fine! Prawns and Smoked Salmon are fine! Mr Whippy Ice cream and Peanuts are also fine- lots of people seem to worry about them! There is really not too much to avoid...! Good Luck!
