How much milk is an 18 month supposed to drink a day? Is two mid sized bottles too much? Our daughters not a great eater and we're wondering if the fact we're giving her too much milk is the reason...she's certainly not wasting away!!

You're so welcome! I'm sure she's not malnourished on 2 bottles a day. But cutting back should help her appetite. If not, give me a shout and I'll let you know what else you can do. Good luck and thanks for the brain point!

The First Steps Nutrition Trust, which is an organisation run by public health nutritionists, says you should give 1-2 year-olds 400mls of whole milk a day, more info on this link on table 3. http://www.firststepsnutrition.org/pdfs/How_much_milk%20_is_needed_by_infants_and_young_children_Feb16.pdf The NHS site doesn't have any guidance on the matter, but there is some general advice about milks and feeding here: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/Pages/drinks-and-cups-children.aspx I give my 20-month-old son two beakers of whole milk a day (one first thing in the morning, and the other before bed), and sometimes he gets a bonus babycino in the day too!

Quite often children who are having too much milk won't eat enough to get a balanced diet and can become malnourished. But each child is different as their size and appetite will vary. If you were to cut the milk down to 2x60ml for a week or two and see if the eating improves, you could then increase the milk if you want to. You could also ensure you offer the milk an hour or so after food but no less than 2 hours before food to ensure your toddler is hungry at meal times. You could also give a vitamin D supplement.

@SleepFairyDee that's brilliant advice. So helpful. Huge thanks. I'd been googling everywhere and hadn't found a direct answer. I'll cut the milk down and let you know how it goes. I'm pretty sure my daughter isn't malnourished given the size of her but I do worry she's not getting a varied enough diet. Thanks again for the advice. (I can only give you one brain point but I want to give you more!)
