Random question, don't know if abyone can help but my daughter who is 18-months is obsessed with things like opening bottles and tubs of face cream etc. Is there a safe toy which recreates this kind of mechanism? She likes how stuff opens and closes I think, but I dont want her messing up my stuff or choking on a bottle top etc.

Often behaviours like this start as explorative but can be maintained by attention so try to make sure that she is not getting more of your attention for playing with the tubs than when she does not. Maybe have a box of things in your room that she can play with and praise her for going to them as opposed to your things. She is still young and like all kids her age will be into anything if allowed- but she is not too put in place a clear rule. Try to make the items less accessible and if she does get them use a clear phrase like "no that is mummy's".

"No that is mummy's" is usually what my kid says to me... Good point about giving her attention at the right time, Livvy.

Hi Livvy! Good to see another expert on board. 🎉 Check out that shiny Tantrum Pro blue tick! 😉

Thanks Livvy, that is really useful. It's hard to know when is good to tell off and when I'm being petty - but guess that mess and choking hazards are a good enough reason. Still on the hunt for good toys that recreate interesting mechanisms etc, so if anyone knows of one, i'm all ears!

Go to Boots or MUJI and buy some travel containers that she can screw and unscrew all day. In the summer you can play worth them outside and add sand/water/soil/rice etc. Hours of fun....

Melissa and Doug do a really good latches board with lots of different fastenings to try. Or alternatively lots of different Tupperware containers will be interesting to her.

Empty milk bottles / plastic containers. Just clean them out properly and make sure that the lids aren't a chokeable size xx
