How do I convince my 1-yr old that bread isn't the only edible substance?

Just keep trying but stay relaxed (easier said then done). Don't make a fuss if they refuse she may love the attention. Just pop down to the Health Clinic to keep an eye on her weight and ask advice from the Health Visitor or Nursery Nurse there as they can tailor advice to your child and you.

Don't know, but definitely not by showing them that cool gif though. I'm repeating the word 'bread' in my head every time the toast pops up and now it's all I can think about.

Have you tried introducing dips? It's a fun use for bread! Maybe try eating together and showing her how to dip hummous, guacamole etc. A friend suggested I made vegetable soup for my son to dip his bread into and it's practically the only way I can get him to eat veg. A child nutritionist also told me that you shouldn't have your kid in front of food they don't like for more than 20 minutes, which is useful to bear in mind and prevents you from losing your patience too.
