What's the right age to give my child their own phone?

I thought 10 was a good age then she'd have it prior to starting secondary school. However our primary school allow y5 children to walk to school and back by themselves. There was no way I was letting her do that without a way of communicating with her so she got the absolute cheapest smartphone you can get. she's 9. So my answer is whenever you start allowing them to go anywhere by themselves.

For me it totally depends WHY you are giving them the phone. Is it just because they want to play games on it? Is it because of pressure at school? Are you concerned that they need to contact you in an emergency? The timings could be different for all of these. In fact, if it's the first example I gave (just to play games) they don't even need a sim card. You could give them an old phone without a sim.

Good point about 'whenever you start allowing them to go anywhere by themselves'. I spent a lot of time in Japan and it's the norm for elementary school kids (6-10yo) to walk to school them elves, so you see A LOT with smartphones.
