Any suggestions for a family movie? Something to interest an 11 year old boy who loves star wars, a 12 year old girl who loves period dramas and something I can stay awake all the way through?

Never ending story, labyrinth, dark crystal, willow, hook, jumanji, last star fighter, the last navigator...

Wow, that's quite tough. An obvious one would be Harry Potter; It has the fantasy elements and story structure of Star Wars (magical powers/a chosen one/young kid from an important family entering a world he never really knew existed) but also has lots of relationship issues/triangles and self-discovery that you see a lot in dramas.

How about The Princess Bride? Been a while since I've seen it, but remember enjoying it as a kid.

Yes! The Princess Bride is indeed really fun. Not sure if it'll connect with new kids (could be my fuzzy nostalgia that makes me still like it)

Lord of the Rings is fantastic. Could be a little long, and may be scary for some kids (depending what they've watched before) but I highly recommend it.

@Mummyantill - Lots of good ideas there.

I LOVED the Dark Crystal! Can't wait till my son's old enough to watch it. Thanks for the reminder @Mummyantill. Labyrinth is amazing too, and David Bowie in a mullet and leggings is a sight to brighten up anyone's day.

@Lisa - Next Tantrum article idea: '10 Amazing Babies With the Power. What power? The power of voodoo. Who do? You do? Do what? Remind me of the babe'

Howls Moving Castle?

Howls Moving Castle?

Yes! Howl's moving castle and many other Ghibli films. I'm a purist an would go for the subtitled versions but the dubbed version is probably best for the kids.
Neil
@rentrn35e I agree! Got to be dubbed for the kids though, and the dub of Howls Moving Castle is pretty good. Ticks the period drama/sci fi box though. And if they like it you have the whole ghibli library to plunder!
Mummyantill
Love ghibli but I'm not sure it will hold the boys attention...

I also found John Carter pretty watchable? And used to like the original Stargate with Kurt Russell.
